In the early 1960s, large groups of guest workers from Anatolia and other parts of Turkey were brought to West Germany. Far from home, music became their primary means of feeling connected and at ease in a new and unfamiliar land. In 1961, an agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Turkey not only brought guest workers but also introduced new music to Germany. Along with their children and grandchildren, these workers laid the foundation for a unique subculture. Driven by nostalgia, boredom, and racism, new musical styles emerged that helped shape contemporary music in Germany.
