SPECIAL | Cinema Diaspora | Echoes of the East
“Celluloid Underground” tells the story of Ehsan Khoshbakht, a filmmaker whose life is intricately linked with the film history of Iran. The film explores his deep connection with his late friend Ahmad Jurghanian, a passionate collector of underground films. Through archival footage, fictional elements, and snippets of film history, Khoshbakht creates a compelling portrait of Jurghanian and his tireless mission to save Iranian films from extinction. We see Jurghanian as a hero, a dealer, but above all, as a man obsessed with the power of cinema.
“Celluloid Underground” is not a conventional documentary. It embraces all the textures of the cinematic medium, from restored prints to rough copies, reflecting the profound love Khoshbakht has for film.
